Doesn’t ring a bell? This is My Neighbour the Yamadas, a comedy film released in July 17, 1999. It is most likely the least recognised Ghibli film out of the 23-24 movies. This movie does not contain a full storyline, but 8-15 minute sketches following a family, the “Yamadas”, hence the name. I watched it quite a while ago with my family, and in my opinion, it is just as good as all the others!

Right off the bat, I’ll deliver my opinion. It doesn’t compare to the more well-known Ghibli movies such as Kiki’s Delivery Service or Princess Kaguya, not even close. However, I think more merit ought to be given. It is a family night worthy film, with laugh out loud moments and an easy storyline to follow. The film is relatable, especially towards a family audience. Despite the animation being “off-putting”, I found it comical and enjoyable too! Its style is very different but gives the experience of a Ghibli film all the same. In addition, I would also like to add on that the music fits the movie so well, the theme at the end got stuck in my head for like a week straight (Que Sera Seraaaaaaa). An amazing film not noticed or talked about by enough people.

Short but not much to say. If you are planning to watch this movie, its available on Netflix (if you haven’t already cancelled your subscription amidst the chaos.) and some other places, probably. Invite your family members and friends if they’re available too! Movies are so much more fun when you have others to laugh with!
